Fall is for yearning! Maybe it’s that Emily Dickinson poem (Autumn) or maybe it’s the Twilight Saga’s back-to-school overtones, but something about September light makes everything romantic.
September is Austin locals’ last hurrah before ACL and Halloweekending dominate the music scene. The only way to honor this time is by supporting live local music all month long (and beyond!)
September Residencies
Hotel Vegas
Tuesdays: Intellectual Property
9 p.m. $10
Never listen to "Oh Yeah" by Intellectual Property — This song almost made me relapse on vaping. No, but in all seriousness, this is delightfully unexpected music. Songs take unpredictable turns without depending on shock value to be unique. This is “staring out the window as the main character in the off-kilter comedy drama of your own life” music. Retro psych-pop with a sprinkle of bossa nova and a splash of disco.
PLUS! Every Tuesday of the residency, Intellectual Property is releasing a new single. PLUS!! Each week is a decade's dress-up party.
Hole in the Wall
Tuesdays: Hidden Floors
7 p.m. NO COVER
Hidden Floors is an approachable rock band playing songs that range from boppy to facemelt-y. They sound more punk than Pearl Jam, but something Eddie Vedder-esque is happening. Particularly, “Black Phillip” is like if Eddie Vedder played a sea shanty while you listened to it on acid.
Wednesdays: Caroline Sears
6-8 p.m. NO COVER
Wednesdays are equal parts clever and tender with Caroline Sears hosting Songwriter’s Happy Hour 6-8. I happened upon this cozy Wednesday by chance and was quickly reeled out of my stumbler’s complacency. Caroline’s songs are strings of brash, cutting lyrics sung sweetly in true folk hero fashion. Check out Songwriter’s Happy Hour to be reminded what “spinnin’ a yarn” is all about.
C-Boys
Mondays: Jennifer Foster & the Audacity
10 p.m. $10
With just about two years under their belts, Jennifer Foster & the Audacity have made quick work of landing a C-Boys residency. Power pop vocals are a through-line of the band’s songs, which range from softer, keys-forward (a la Nina Simone) to more strings-forward blues rock.
White Horse
Fridays: Cactus Lee
12 a.m. $10
Cactus Lee is a resident once again, this time at White Horse, and this time with a full band. Read his August write-up.
